THE GOAL:
Flexible solutions for garment storage and shipping logistics

Quality and customer service have always been top priorities for the Swabian men’s outfitter Digel. This is how the company has built up a good name for itself over decades and in recent years has shaped itself into a brand with international appeal. Digel customers appreciate that any order received before 2 p.m. is shipped the same day. In order to reliably deliver on this service promise, Digel relies on Schönenberger’s logistics system at its logistics center in Nagold.

  • A FLEXIBLE SYSTEM FOR DYNAMICALLY GROWING DISTRIBUTION

  • INTERLOCKING OF FULLY AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL TRANSPORT

  • TIME SAVINGS THANKS TO SHORT DISTANCES AND PERFECT ORGANIZATION
  • QUALITY AND SERVICE OF A LOW-MAINTENANCE, HEAVY-DUTY SYSTEM

A FLEXIBLE SYSTEM FOR DYNAMICALLY GROWING DISTRIBUTION

On average, around 1,200 parcels leave Nagold every day, with many more at peak times. In addition, there are approx. 6,000 parts of hanging garments for trading partners. All in all, Digel thus records 35,000 parts that are delivered every week and replenished accordingly from the production sites. The total storage capacity today is around 450,000 parts.

MODULAR SYSTEM FOR EASY EXTENSIONS

The three-story logistics center in Nagold was commissioned in 2004 and expanded in 2018. The new building had become necessary for capacity reasons. With Schönenberger as system supplier, Digel had chosen a “good acquaintance”, because Schönenberger systems were already in use at the old site. What convinced Digel was not only flexible solutions for garment storage and shipping logistics from Schönenberger, but also the efficiency and flexibility of the proposed overhead transport system. The dovetailing of manual workstations with fully automated transport routes and the optimum use of space thanks to the simple, modular system also met the wishes of the planners and decision-makers at Digel.

INTERLOCKING OF FULLY AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL TRANSPORT

The Schönenberger storage and transport system Omniflo proves to be the ideal solution until today. It enables intelligent sorting and ordering of merchandise, easy access to individual garments, and fast turnaround times – even under the heaviest of loads.

The identification of the trolleys by means of barcodes or labels ensures the defined flow of goods as well as continuous control in the system. The trolleys, which are coupled to form long trains, are transported automatically wherever this makes sense or increases efficiency.

As a result, large quantities of new goods are transported fully automatically via ascending conveyors to the warehouses on the two upper floors, where they are automatically moved to stations. Transelastic conveyors ensure continuous transport between functional units on one level.

TIME SAVINGS THANKS TO SHORT DISTANCES AND PERFECT ORGANIZATION

The accelerated transport of the trolley trains also works manually. Thanks to the smooth-running trolleys, even trains many meters long can be pulled by one employee without any significant use of force. Short distances within the functional areas are also important for the fast throughput of goods. In goods receiving and quality assurance, for example, dynamic stowage areas can be divided in such a way that employees with mobile workstations can always approach the goods quickly and directly. Picked goods are also grouped together on trolleys, linked to trains and routed to dispatch along optimized routes. Flexible solutions for clothing storage intended for the customer.

QUALITY AND SERVICE OF A LOW-MAINTENANCE, HEAVY-DUTY SYSTEM

Even with a significant increase in transport volumes, there have never been any bottlenecks in transport. And this despite the rapid increase in customer orders in recent years,” praises Andreas Broch, Shipping Manager at Digel. The system does not require much service, he tells us. A few wear parts to replace now and then, and that’s taken care of by our own in-house technicians. Digel only has the inclined conveyors serviced annually by Schönenberger Service – the conveyors installed in 2004 are still running completely trouble-free after 14 years, even under the heaviest loads. The goal of realizing flexible solutions for clothing warehouses and shipping logistics with the help of Schoenenberger systems was thus achieved sustainably and at minimal cost.
